During Memorial Day Weekend, the usual hustle and bustle of downtown Manhattan pauses for a brief moment since many New Yorkers leave the city to enjoy their three-day break. I decided to take this opportunity to visit Milk and Cookies Bakery at 19 Commerce Street in the West Village.
Located in Greenwich Village, Milk and Cookies Bakery is close to similar bakeries, ice cream shops, and quaint restaurants. The bakery maintains a small, unassuming presence on its block, almost as if to not disturb the residential townhouses which surround it.
As soon as you step inside, you immediately notice the cozy nature of the bakery. There are a total of four tables, each of which seat two people, a few window seats, and a side counter with four stools. I visited around 4 PM on a Saturday during Memorial Day Weekend, and there were two other customers seated. There was no line, and one person was working behind the counter.
The chalkboard menu features their current cookie and ice cream offerings, and the variety is definitely expansive! Their bars are located directly on the counter by the cash register, and you can see their freshly baked cookies neatly displayed on the cooling racks just behind the counter. I decided to try their Salted Oat Cookie ($3) and Magic Bar ($4.25).
I have to admit, just from the name, the Salted Oat Cookie didn’t sound very appealing to me, so I didn’t have high expectations. However, after trying it, I was completely sold. The Salted Oat Cookie is made up of bits of toffee, oats, and a hint of sea salt – the perfect mix of sweet and salty.
At $3, this is on the pricier side given the size of the cookie. However, its unique flavor and length of freshness may very well make up for its average size. I’ve visited my fair share of bakeries through NYC, and I don’t think I’ve ever tried a cookie quite like this one. As far as freshness goes, I ate half of it on the day I bought it and preserved the other half in the fridge overnight. Surprisingly, the cookie was not hard and cold like most cookies would be the next morning, but it actually maintained its chewy texture. This scrumptious cookie is definitely going on my favorites list!
The Magic Bar was also absolutely delicious. It’s described as a “seven layer graham cracker, chocolate, and coconut confection.” In my opinion, it essentially tastes like a mixture of coconut, chocolate, and cookies – all in one!
At $4.25, this is on the average-slightly pricy range. Since Magic Bars can be found at many different bakeries, I can’t say that this is a product unique to Milk and Cookies Bakery. I’ve tried other Magic Bars which were either far too sweet or the ingredients were very imbalanced – the coconut flavor may overtake the flavor of the cookies, for example. This Magic Bar, however, seemed to have just the right amount of everything; you could pinpoint each layer and flavor, and I loved the richness of the chocolate. As far as freshness goes, as I did with the Salted Oat Cookie, I ate half of the Magic Bar on the day I bought it and preserved the other half in the fridge overnight. I was surprised at how well texture held up until the next morning – the flakiness of the coconut, crispness of the graham cracker, and chewiness of the chocolate all remained.
Overall, I was happy with my first visit to Milk and Cookies Bakery, and I am definitely hoping to return in the future to try out their Salted Caramel Chocolate Brownie, Dark Chocolate Toffee Cookie, and Vanilla Cream Filled Chocolate Wafer!
