This luxury candle startup knows how to market its products.
Upon first glance, the brown shipping box seems nothing out of the ordinary. But from that point forward, everything is completely unique from any candle you’ve lit before. Inside the package lies a perfectly fitted white box with gold lettering on the front that reads the company’s name – Otherland. Opening this white box, I was surprised to find my name on a custom made label on the inside of the cover. This small, but very personable, touch was just one of the many aspects of this candle that I appreciated, and I hadn’t even finished unboxing it yet. My name is followed by a short message with the company’s Instagram account and information about the specific candle I ordered. Now, even after opening two boxes, the candle was still hidden from view. Covering the candle is a decorative design, and it’s almost too pretty to take off. Nevertheless, I needed to remove this last barrier to finally see the candle. When I did so, I found myself even more impressed.
On the candle label is another ornate, eye-catching design with ‘Otherland’ in the same gold lettering centered perfectly in the middle. Each label is drawn by an artist, which adds to the individuality of every reusable frosted glass tumbler the candle comes in. I never thought that a candle could be described as having character, but this Otherland candle has just that.
Beneath it lies a box of matches with its cover matching the same design as the one previously covering the candle. The amount of detail and designs I experienced within just a few seconds of unboxing were very pleasant surprises, and they were definitely appreciated and duly noted. I especially loved the very aesthetically pleasing pink marble designed candle top protecting the wick. Needless to say, these candles are instantly photogenic; regardless of your background or lighting, they’ll make for a great Instagram photo.
Now comes the most important part – the scent. I ordered Cardamom Milk, and Otherland describes its scent as a combination of Frothy Milk, Cardamom, and Praline Woods. Letting it burn for about an hour, the vanilla-like scent permeated throughout my apartment. I typically get headaches from sweet-scented candles since they tend to be overbearing, but Cardamom Milk smells subtle, lasting, and surprisingly natural. Otherland candles are made from a coconut and soy blend which not only provides an “ideal, smooth-burning base,” but also a naturally pleasant scent. I can definitely smell the difference between these and other candles that smell artificially sweet.
Lastly, let’s talk about the price. I could never bring myself to purchase a luxury candle because they tend to cost upwards of $65. Priced at just $36, Otherland candles prove to be strong competitors in the luxury candle space. Plus, even though the candles weigh in at just 8 oz., they boast an impressive 55 hour burn time, which means you’re getting your money’s worth.
Otherland’s presentation experience is truly unmatched. Between this, its meticulously crafted scents, and fair price point, I have no doubt that this company will continue to experience significant growth within the coming months.
Thank you to Otherland for sending this along, and be sure to check them out on Instagram @OtherlandCo!
