If you’d like to join me for my weekly faith series, I’ll be using the RSVCE of the Bible. Here is the entire John I passage.
“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light.
The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
One of the reasons the Christian faith is so challenging is because we must fully dedicate ourselves to and believe in God. When I say that Christians must believe in God, I’m not talking about the kind of belief that children have in Santa. Children believe in Santa because they want him to bring them presents on Christmas Eve. Christians believe in God, not because we want something out of Him or even because we fear Him, but simply because we must acknowledge the inevitability and the unchangeable reality of God. He simply is, and to deny Him is to deny truth itself. Our purpose on this earth is to understand and give thanks for what He has done for us, spread His word, and encourage others to believe in Him as well.
God sent John the Baptist to spread word of the coming of the Messiah knowing that John would not be well received by all those he came across. But in spite of any and all hardships we endure, we must continue in our journey, appreciate the life that we have been given, and recognize that we have this life only because of Christ. We must remember that we are afforded this life only because He died on the cross for us. We have a responsibility to believe in the Lord, trust in His plan, and dedicate our lives to doing right by Him.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to him, and cried, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.’”) And from his fulness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.”
