Last week, my family and I had the pleasure of dining at Kyma Hudson Yards. We had a 5pm reservation on a Friday evening and arrived as soon as the restaurant opened for dinner. My mom and brother are very familiar with the Hudson Yards area, but they hadn’t yet tried Kyma since this location opened fairly recently. I dined at Kyma Flatiron earlier this year and really enjoyed my meal, so I was excited to try out new menu items at the Hudson Yards location!
The indoor dining space was a lovely, classy setting. It’s versatile enough to be a suitable family-friendly restaurant as well as a place to get dinner and drinks with friends. I appreciated how the tables were spaced out enough to give privacy for conversations between separate parties.
Shortly after seating us, the server brought out Kyma’s complimentary flatbread with olive oil. I usually don’t find bread at restaurants notable enough to write about, but my brother devoured these in such a short period of time that I had to include them in my review! He loved how warm these were and said that they were the perfect after-school snack.
For cocktails, my mom and I ordered the Yellow Mango and Lychee Martini. The Yellow Mango cocktail is made with Le Sin Vodka or Stray Dog Gin, mango-apple, elderflower liqueur, and lemon. If you’ve read any of my other restaurant reviews, you’ll know that I’m a fan of fruity cocktails. I loved how sweet and noticeable the mango-apple combination was in this drink, and it worked very well with the lemon.
The Lychee Martini had Grey Goose, St. Germain, Iychee juice, and fresh lime. My mom likes sweet cocktails as well and prefers to not taste the alcohol, which you could taste in this Lychee Martini. So while this wasn’t the drink for her, you’d definitely enjoy it if you like tasting your liquor! This typically means there are higher levels of alcohol, so you can be sure you’re getting your money’s worth.
Next, we ordered the Crab Cakes and Calamari for our appetizers. As soon as the waiter brought these out, my mom immediately noticed the lovely presentation of the dishes. It looked incredibly appetizing and we couldn’t wait to try everything.
The Crab Cakes had jumbo lump crab, brussel slaw, and chili aioli. I’ve added emphasis to the jumbo lump crab because there truly were large chunks of crab meat, which my brother really enjoyed. He gladly ate both crab cakes!
The Calamari was crispy and served with Cretan tomato sauce. I hadn’t had calamari in years prior to eating this, and it was a tasty course to start my meal with. The portion size of this appetizer was definitely large enough to split among two or three people, and I even had leftovers to take home at the end.
Finally, we ordered the Pan Seared Scallops and Lobster Pasta for our entrees. The Pan Seared Scallops were made with sweet potato skordalia, wild mushroom, and black garlic vinaigrette hazelnuts. In my opinion, and my family members agree with me, the scallops were the highlight of the meal! They were tender, extremely easy to cut into, and packed with flavor. We will definitely order this again next time.
The Lobster Pasta was made with Maine lobster, fettucine, tomato, and myzithra. I’ve loved lobster dishes ever since I was little – much to the dismay of my parents’ wallets – and I continue to love them to this day. I was very pleasantly surprised at just how much lobster was included in this pasta dish, and it tasted delicious! The lobster went superbly well with the fettuccine, tomato, and myzithra.
All in all, we loved our experience at Kyma Hudson Yards and would definitely recommend dining here on your next evening out in the city!
